Waiting for the Meteor

I don’t hold much hope for humanity tonight. Perhaps it is the fact that I have to pay attention to two elections right now. One is enough to make ya crazy. Two is enough to make you realize how fucked we are. I am just starting to think there may be too many crazy people in the world. Too many selfish people who only give a fuck about themselves and a handful of people around them. Too many people that are so scared of change and helping others that they are perfectly content to keep their world somewhere between 1957 and 1988.

It feels that the ability to compromise and work as one, for the better of the planet and our species, has been lost. Perhaps it never existed all. Sometimes I look to the sky and think to myself, it wouldn’t be so bad if a meteor just came crashing into earth. Like when your dog hits the switch on the surge protector underneath your desk and your PC is immediately shut down. You know the PC you have not restarted in a month. Your internet browser chugs like a frat boy on spring break. Videos stutter like a senator caught in an expense scandal. Sure you could try closing some tabs or try a different browser, but sometimes things need a reboot.

So among everything else on my mind, there is one topic in particular I would like to emphasize on. That is the easily offended and politically correct inquisition going on. No one better point fingers at anyone except themselves. This isn’t a he said she said thing. This isn’t a battle between the good ol’ boys and the high falutin’ city folk. Point that finger at yourself and call it a night. Don’t worry, I’ve already pointed a finger at myself. Just go ahead and sift through my archive – please do and share – to find the instances where I have been offended. Enjoy zingers such as this and that.

Every group, every demographic, every walk of life. Everyone has been offended lately. That isn’t to say that we shouldn’t be. It is just that everyone is doing it and so everyone else does it to. If they can, why can’t we? Because, maybe you shouldn’t be offended to the point of doing something. Maybe you should just be offended, but not make a big deal about it. Maybe your argument is stealing the thunder from important discussions that need to be had. Maybe your argument shorts other arguments out. Then people begin to lose hope and wonder why they tried in the first place. Then we all start looking to the sky and start waiting for that meteor.

Taxes: Deficits & Surpluses

If you have been reading my posts for awhile, you will probably have been able to assume or have read that I lean a little to the left. Although, I like to keep things a bit more on the moderate side and am I big fan of compromise. Both sides shaking hands and working together in jolly cooperation.

Here is a stunner. I don’t mind being taxed. Do I love being taxed, no. However, I live in a capitalist country. I like buying shit and getting a good deal on it. Why wouldn’t I want my government to do the same. Sometimes, they can get a better deal on things than we could. Sometimes they don’t. The main thing here is that they are buying shit. A lot of the time it is for the good of society: roads, health care, education. Sometimes it is for them: babes, beach bungalows, and blow.

Yes, I do have a big issue when our tax dollars are used for some politician’s slush fund. Yes, I don’t like it when money seems to be wasted. Yes, I don’t enjoy when the government buys things that I wouldn’t spend my money on. You know what? Without getting into another conversation here, that is what voting is for. Vote for the people who want to spend your money the way you want it spent.

I don’t want my government to run a surplus. That means that they have taken my money and have not spent it. They have cut programs and left guns on a shelf. I want the government to make it rain. Food for kids, needles for addicts, cheaper transit for everyone. Give it to me!

At the same time deficits are bad and I don’t want them to run one. Sure, maybe one could be ran for a year or so, but that is it. I am not running up my credit cards. Why would I want my government to do that?

I am not really sure why taxes are held in such a bad light. Yes, it sucks having money taken away from you. But driving down a nice road is good, right? Having an ambulance haul you to the hospital is good, right? Having the coast guard, sewers systems, and national parks, while different things, are good to have. Right?

So in closing, deficits are bad and surpluses are bad. Get money, spend money, and keep that closing number at zero. I know there are people that are all “I can spend money better!” Sure you can buddy. The same way you can fix that sports teams performance the day after the game from your couch.

Ted Cruz: Hashtag Reverse Palpatining

Ted Cruz recently announced his candidacy for president. My heart slowly slid back down my throat after the doomsday scenario was played in my head. The one that has eighties horror movie synths whirring in the background, while lousy superimposed flames lick around Ted Cruz’s cackling mug, while money from telecom lobbyists rains from above, while I have to pay extra for my blog, that no one can get to. I realized something. Ted Cruz and Pat Buchanan look very similar.

Go ahead, google it. I will wait here patiently. It can’t be denied can it? It isn’t so much that they look alike, it is that Ted Cruz looks like Pat Buchanan after some heavy plastic surgery. You can see it right? Especially around the eyes and forehead. The chin!

Pat Buchanan has ran for president several times and was never the guy tapped to get in the ring for the big bout. The sci-fi nerd in me got all titillated at the thought that maybe this is Pat’s time to shine. He hasn’t ran in recent years. It could be interesting if this is his comeback. Reinvented from the ground up. New face! New name!

Has anyone seen Pat Buchanan lately? Furthermore, has anyone seen Ted Cruz and Pat Buchanan in the same room? I am sure Patty is hanging out somewhere around Fox news. I am not sure, I seldom go there. When I do, I get a burning anxiety, like I am doing something intrinsically wrong. It feels worse than the gaggy bad feeling I get when I go to the polar opposite, Huffpost. Either way, apparently I am some sort of progressive moderate that doesn’t identify with the extremes and I haven’t seen him.

Bill C51: I could say something clever, but they will already know what I am going to say, so what’s the point?

For those of you not in Canada, Bill C51 is in the same vein as big brother. In a nutshell it wants to increase spying on citizens and give Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) the ability to be a civilian police force on top of its existing spy agency powers. Why is this bad you may be asking? Well, CSIS was created through the actions of the MacDonald Commission which took the existing spy agency powers away from the RCMP. Because there are problems with giving one group too much power, and most certainly so, when given even greater power than the first group that proved incapable of handling too much power.

If there is too much bureaucracy between these two agencies, that a simple communication from CSIS cannot get the RCMP over to someone’s abode to stop them from doing something not deemed socially acceptable, then that is what should be fixed. Not giving CSIS the near unlimited power to trace someone’s interactions and movements. Then just show up on the doorstep and detain them. Just twitter, no warrant.

Giving organizations too much power is bad. It isn’t a question of if it goes bad, it is a matter of how long until it goes bad. Right there, in our history books and two paragraphs ago, you will find that we already went through this. Once you slam your hand in the car door, you don’t wait thirty-three years and do it again, even harder. You remember it was a bad idea the first time! We are only human and humans have a tendency to go a bit bat shit when acting in a group and given great power. We are only trying to save us from ourselves. And to prevent CSIS from eventually looking like a bunch of assholes.

I think the scarey thing is that this bill is being rushed through Parliament. That the Conservatives and the New Moderate, Please Vote For Us, We Have Offspring Party of Canada seem to be in cahoots and aggreance. Which leaves the official opposition, the NDP, and other parties, such as the Green Party to speak for us schmos.

Has no one up at the top read 1984? Does everyone not see the prophetic scathing cynicism of sci-fi when we do something like this? If you want to know what I am doing, Stephen Harper, follow me on twitter and read my blog. Please share it on facebook, I need my readership to go up.
